Hi, Thanks for your reply and the information you provided, im sure it wil be of assistance if I do desing and build a pump/filter system, I think right now im kind of leaning towards just buying a canister pump/filter and the lifegard heat module that John Paner mentions, but either way thank you for your help I do appreciate it!!

Best Regards,
Donny

  Hi Donny,

Not that I'm an expert in re-circulating water systems, but I have had some experience which may help. There are plenty of different ways to configure your system, but keeping it simple is a good start.

Use the bigger bucket (15 gallons) as it gives you more room for heaters, filters etc. Just use the 1 pump as trying to balance 2 will cause problems. Suck from the animal enclosure using your existing drain hole, but make sure you put a tap before ans after your pump, so that you can mainatin the pump without all the water running out.

You may also need to put a filter either inline, between tap and pump, or over the hole in the bottom of the tank, so that you are not sucking up crap all the time. Make sure that your animals can not sit on the hole in the bottom of the tank and block the water flow (or get suctioned to the bottom). The inline filter may not be necessary - it depends or how dirty your enclosure is and the type of pump you use.

Pump the water up to your 15 gal bucket which should be higher than your pond. Your pump can sit on the floor. In your bucket put a filter (filter wool or charcoal) and then a heater. Let your water run out under gravity back to your enclosure. The outlet hole in your bucket should be nearer the top so that your heater is always underwater. If the pump fails or electricty go off you won't burn out anything or flood the place. I'm not sure that 2 x 250w heaters will help much, but give it a try. Your pump only need to go very slowly.

  Hope this helps,

  Cheers, Boyd

I would like to build a external canister type pump/filter that can be located outside of animal enclosure.

I am thinking a a 5 or 15 gallon plastic bucket or drum and 1 inlet from the pond to the bucket and 1 outlet from the bucket to the pond .... inlet/outlet would be pvc and or rubber tubing.

I would also like to add heating eliment to the pump/filter, I was thinking one or possibly two 250watt stealth aquarium water heaters.

Can anyone give me some ideas and or pointers on designing this, it doesnt seem like it will be to hard but still id like to get it right and get it the best I can the first try.

What type of pump should I use, will I need 1 or 2 pumps, 1 to get the water from the pond to the bucket and 1 to get the water back to the pond ..... or can this be done with 1 pump

The pond is only about 150-200 gallon (estimated)

I originally installed PVC tubing for a drain which I dont really even use, I was thinking this could be used to move the water from the pond to the bucket

I would like to keep cost to a mininum and use supplies that I already have if possible, stealth heater(s) and pond pumps

Ideas, first hand accounts and suggestions would be appreciated
