Laurel,
Thank you very much for your time in responding. Do you or anyone else happen to have the email address or other contact info for Rom Whitaker?
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
The latest information I have is from a Gharial
Multi-Task Force report (dated Sept. 2006) I recieved
from Rom Whitaker about a week ago. If you contact Rom
or Nikhil Whitaker at the Madras Croc Bank or Harry
Andrews they would probably be able to give you more
information. The outlook is not good for the gharial,
these population estimates are rather alarming.
The report lists the estimate for India at less than
200 mature adults, and less than 35 adults for Nepal.
It also states gharials are virtually extinct in
Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, and presumed extinct
in Myanmar.
As far as I know the Gharial Multi-Task Force website
is not yet online but is due to go online very soon.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Laurel
