CROCLIST: Indian Gharial

Hi, all.

As Laurel says, the gharial is in dire straits now. The numbers are indeed down to around 200 adults in the wild! That's pretty drastic. You may still see shows on cable stations about the successful reintroduction program run in India for 20 years or so, but the truth is that it hasn't worked. The numbers are as low as they have ever been.

The GMTF web site will be up and running soon - there've been a few delays due to certain things, but we should get it going within the next week or two. The site will have the various reports and survey results etc available.

Also, we will have a CafePress site, so we are hoping you all buy yourselves and any reptile fans you know some gharial stuff for Christmas! ;) It's the only place you will be able to buy genuine gharial t-shirts etc, and every penny we make will go to gharial conservation. We will be keeping the prices as low as possible.

Once the website is up and running, I'll let you know, and please please please have a look and help us start raising some funds for the gharial.

And of course remember that the Tomistoma Task Force is still going strong. To date, the TTF has been a very successful unit, resulting in surveys, research, as well as helping zoos with captive animals. The TTF website (www.tomistoma.org) has lots of info including survey reports etc on Tomistoma, as well as the TTF fund raising shop.So for Christmas this year, you will have the choice of Chinese alligator, Tomistoma, and gharial merchandise on CafePress! Caps, mugs, t shirts....sounds ideal to me!

Just remember that there is no profit made on any of this stuff. We are all volunteers, and all this is to raise funds to help ensure the survival of these species in the wild.

Thanks,

Colin
