either penetrate and come out again, or they break off.  Presumably if it
didn't break off then Steve would have pulled it out if it had a stingray
attached to it, as would most people I'd imagine.  Either way, he probably
didn't realise what damage it had caused.

My (possibly incorrect) understanding of stingrays is that if they  
jab you, the barb doesn't break off, it stays in you and also  
attached to the stingray. Is that incorrect? If it's not incorrect, I  
don't think Steve had much of a choice. I guess it was pull the barb  
out, or be towed around by a stingray.
