Message-ID: Hey everyone, I have some fantastic news to share. We just hatched out 3 siamese crocs last night from our pair here at Detroit! They have been at the zoo since 1989 and this is the first successful hatching for this pair, so we are pretty excited to say the least. With a few changes I made to the husbandry of our pair, the help of my staff, and I'm sure a little bit of luck thrown in to the mix; we have 3 seemingly healthy crocs. I've attached links for pictures of these little fellas for your viewing enjoyment. If the links do not work, e-mail me directly for pictures. Calling and scrapping or scratching eggs to determine if hatching is near has been done for a long time. I did it back in the early 80s with Siamese and cataphractus. I seem to think that this is not new and we've always pretty well known this to be true but the following story appeared in the L.A. Times today: June 28, 2008 Crocodile babies 'talk' before birth Baby crocodiles start calling to one another and their mothers just before they hatch, perhaps signaling that it is time to be born, according to a report Monday in the journal Current Biology. Researchers tested 10 crocodiles and their eggs, recording sounds the babies made. When the sounds were played back, the babies hastened to break out of their shells and eight of the mothers tried to dig up their eggs. Researchers said that many baby reptiles are eaten by predators right after birth, so it may be important for them to hatch together and for the mother to be there as they do. _______________________________________________ Croclist mailing list Croclist at lists.gatorhole.com http://lists.gatorhole.com/mailman/listinfo/croclist Croclist Image Website: http://reptilians.org/croclist/ -- No virus found in this incoming message.
