From james at earthmedia.co.uk Tue Dec 1 15:05:13 2009 From: james at earthmedia.co.uk (James Ewen) Date: Tue, 01 Dec 2009 17:05:13 +0300 Subject: CROCLIST: Crocodiles in White-water Message-ID: I am a wildlife cameraman and producer based in Uganda and currently looking at a film project focussing on Nile crocodiles that are living on a stretch of the Victoria Nile. The environment can only be described as extreme white water. The section runs through steep gullies lined with thorn forest, very little terrestrial game visits the area. There are numerous pods of hippos, and it is very likely that there are large fish (Nile Perch) in the pools below the rapids, several km downriver is a delta area with plenty of terrestrial game. The question that I am asking is what exactly would they doing there in the white water? Could they be cut off in some way and have found ways to live solely off the fish. A friend who is a rafting veteran in Africa has been down this stretch (indeed was the first to ever do it), describes being regularly charged by crocs here and saw large specimens holding their own in 30KM/Hr currents with tons of water barrelling down on them, he suggests that the fact there are no people here means that they have no fear of humans... I imagine it is one of the few places in Uganda where crocs would not encounter people regularly. It would be excellent to get some expert opinion on this. Please send PM?s to me so as not to clog the board.
