I dread to think that some of our croc meat consumers must have inherited free tooth fillings. Last year I discussed the idea with Dr Paolo Martelli of using the PIT tags again to improve the accuracy of our husbandry database for the crocs raised on the farm (+/- 50,000). Dr Paolo suggested us to implant the tag in the back leg of our hatchlings (once they are +/- 1 kg in bodyweight), between the foot and the knee to stop the PIT tag from migrating too far. The leg meat is also less commercially valuable than the tail meat if the butcher need to incise the muscles to retrieve the tag. For the last 15 years we have regularly been using the Fish & Small Animals monel tags sold by National Bands & Tags in the US. When transferring the hatchlings out of the incubator we tag them with a very small tag on the back foot. Six months later, we add a second (bigger and easier to read) tag on the other web. So far, most of the tags (at least of the two tags) seem to remain on the web till the animals are culled. Prior to that the farm staff used to place a tag on a tail scute and we ended up losing more than 75% of them... They fit nicely under the skin, and a dab of superglue prevents them from being ejected. No migration problems experienced here (tags in place 1-2 years). The other advantage of placing them in the tail is that you can wave the reader over them at a distance from the head (eg. on a pole) without the need for capture.
