There is also the Dehiwala Zoo near Colombo, where they have surprisingly Tomistoma, rhombifer, and a couple of other crocs. This is the only concern we've acted on, and its worked fine for several hundred C. palustris being transferred between pens (1/2 hour to 2 hours) and zoos (sometimes a 20 - 25 hour journey, from India to Europe). Never have we had problems, species including Gavialis, C. palustris, C. siamensis, C. moreletii, but I would be interested in anything else someone has to add. Capturing animals 1/2 days after feeding is a definete no no, we've had one experience in the past, which killed several palustris (upon necropsy undigested offal and bones were found right behind the glottis, trying to make its way up) , wont be making that mistake again. Another anecdotal sign is "bulging eyes" in the animals, and a abnormal bulge visible from outside at the throat. Hope this helps, Cheers Nik On Fri, May 21, 2010 at 3:22 AM, Cherie wrote: > Good Afternoon, > I came across a transportation suggestion that I have just know heard of > for the first time: > > Ensure that the head is not lower than the body during transport so that > any regurgitated fluids can flow back down the oesophagus rather than pool > at the opening of the glottis. We shipped with duct tape around the jaws, on a flat surface. We did, however, wait far longer than 3 days between shipping and feeding. Crocs do regularly regurgitate fur, en masse, if you feed thawed rodents and rabbits as we do. The guys at St Augustine will be far better eqippied to answer these questions than I am, but I hope I helped a little. Best! If the mouth of a crocodile is tied closed, a stick or block must be placed between the teeth to hold the mouth slightly ajar. This will minimise the risk of drowning the animal if it vomits under restraint. Where possible, crocodiles should not be fed for at least three days prior to transport to minimise risks. Has anyone transporting a croc ever encountered this problem? It was my belief that crocs couldn't actually regurgitate on their own. However, I do see the reasoning that if they get 'motion sick' that fluids may try to come up and thus lay in a region of the throat that could cause trouble. Thank you for your expert opinions.
